Looking back, it’s pretty insane that a major label was interested in putting out a Melvins album, but the grunge explosion was a helluva drug. Atlantic Records signed the sludge pioneers for their fifth record, Houdini, and tapped a tragically struggling Kurt Cobain for the producer role, likely to capitalize off of Nirvana’s growing popularity. Things didn’t go as planned in that department, but the album remains the Melvins’ most popular work — and it’s got an iconic cover that’s deserving of our 180g gatefold edition. Eli Enis
