Faith No More’s fifth album, King for a Day... Fool for a Lifetime, was a commercial and critical letdown up its release in 1995, but over time this genre-bending behemoth has earned overdue appreciation for being one the band’s most fascinating releases. As the first alt-metal band’s first album with guitarist Jim Martin, who was replaced by Mr. Bungle axeman Trey Spruance, the group naturally drifted from their metallic expectations and embraced weirder, poppier and proggier sounds alike — and to great effect.
